  • I was reading this book and came across a quote that I wanted to share on my blog.  What do you think about this challenging description of the change that has occurred in the church today?

"In the time of Tertullian [late second century], someone wanting to belong to the church had to go through a rigorous period of training focused on behavior (how daily life was actually lived).  In other words, to belong to the new community of Jesus, a person was mentored in practicing change in habits.  Today leaders talk about the need to create a safe, non-threatening, low threshold of belonging in order to draw people into the church.  Note the two radically different ways in which the same language is being used.  These approaches suggest contrasting sources of understanding.  In the latter case and in our contemporary context, the source of this thinking is not a theologically, biblically formed imagination but the latest marketing strategies that come from polls and studies about what people are looking for when they want to join a group.  This does not suggest that we not seek to welcome people into our churches.  It is to point out the distinct sources of our leadership imagination today" (119).

Today, many professing Christians refuse to receive biblical instruction from their spiritual mentor, pastor, or friend when it has to do with behavioral change.  How things have changed!  No wonder the statistics of morality between the church and the world are hard to notice any significant difference.  It is my opinion that we all need to be more open to spiritual instruction and correction giving by people who love us and want the best for us.  Lord, help me to be teachable.

  • Why do churches move to small groups?

    1.  Our focus on solving problems.

Americans are programmatic.  Everything we tend to do is to solve a problem through a program.  Do you want to lose weight?  Get on the internet and find a long list of optional programs to help you accomplish your goals.  Want to get married?  Get on the internet and find a program to help you meet singles that are "perfect" for you.  The church has followed suit.  Every problem a person faces, we can try to meet that need with some kind of pre-made program package.  Small groups often become a problem solver for the church to grow, develop relationships, become more healthy, develop leaders, etc.

    2.  Our focus on individuals.

Americans are individualistic.  Everything we do is for the individual.  The church can easily slip into this trend.  Even small groups, which you would think are not about the individual, tend to be designed to individual needs.  First, they are often started by the pastor to help his church grow (often an individualistic aspiration).  Second, they are promoted as something that can help the individual become a leader, help the individual meet people, help the individual grow spiritually.

Scott Boren, in The Relational Way, states:

"Jesus instructed us, 'Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you' (Matt. 6:33). I often find church leaders seeking first the development of their church through a small group structure.  They seek church growth, evangelism, church health, interpersonal connections, personal growth, and a biblical model.  All good things, but the good is often the enemy of the best" (70).

At Living Word Nazarene we are beginning to develop holistic small groups.  We are calling them Life Groups.  What if our focus for these groups was not just to solve problems or even to meet the individualistic needs of people, but something greater?  What if our focus was to enter into the Kingdom of God, a relational kingdom?  I want to seek His kingdom first in my life.  I am quite confident that if I did seek His kingdom first God would be faithful to take care of all these other important things for me too.

  • Good morning to everyone.  It has been ages since my last blog.  But, I am back.  We have been renovating our church website (going live on July 7) and it will include a blog page from me.  I look forward to hearing from you in the days ahead.

I have included a new picture of our family.

We had a great Christmas and New Years!

  • Jenni, Bekah, and I spent one Friday recently at the zoo.  Bekah is pulling her Elmo backpack next to Daddy.

I am coaching an Upwards Basketball team at our church.  We are 3-1, by the way.  Our success is mainly due to our cheerleader.  Jenni made her outfit.

Jenni has been watching two children, Ruthy and Josiah, recently.  They are the children of Robert and Rhesa Rodriguez.  Robert is our children's pastor.  Here is Bekah and Ruthie playing.

  • "I know a wheel is starting to fall off when the meal I'm preparing becomes more important than the people I'm preparing it for.  When work becomes more important than the family I'm working for.  When a point I'm making becomes more important than the person I'm making it to." - Ken Gire, Windows of the Soul: Experiencing God in New Ways

  • Last Saturday, I returned with 14 others from Living Word Nazarene from our Work and Witness trip to Seliche, Ukraine.  What a wonderful trip we had.  God directed and blessed our path.

Our work project was the education portion of a new church in the village of Seliche.  This was the scene when we arrived...

We moved dirt, finished pouring the footer, put in gravel, poured the floor, and laid block up to the first floor...

We did our sightseeing in Kiev, Ukraine, and London, England.  Note the fuzz on my face...

Our witnessing opportunities were abundant.  We continue to pray for the people seeking God who we had the privilege of meeting... Katya, Valentine, Ruslan, Rodney, and Fran and Ann.

It is great to be home with my girls.  I missed Jenni and Bekah incredibly!

  • Our church begins an 1970's style interactive dinner theater tonight (through Saturday night).  It is called The Love Liner.  It will be alot of fun and a good opportunity to introduce some of our Christian friends from church with those we are witnessing to outside the church.

I have begun studying for my first Doctor of Ministry seminar which lasts from September 25-29.  This begins a three-year educational journey for me through Houston Graduate School of Theology.  You may notice a number of more books that I am reading in my bloggings.  I just finished reading "The Power of Vision" by George Barna.  This is my first of 13 to read for my first seminar.

Jenni's sister, Julie Zehr, had her baby yesterday.  All is well for Julie and Allison Marie.  Praise to the Lord!  Congratulations Brad and Julie!
